Anastasiya Ryabchuk

Anastasiya Ryabchuk is Associate Professor in Sociology at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. Her research interests include homelessness, poverty and urban marginality, labour and the labour movement in post-Soviet contexts, and infrastructural vulnerabilities in frontline communities of the Donbas region.

In collaboration with the EMPTINESS project, she presented her fieldwork on coal-mining towns and villages near the demarcation line in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts prior to the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. During her 2022-23 stint in France as a PAUSE Scholar-at-Risk at INALCO, Paris, she carried out research on Ukrainian refugees. Anastasiya is also interested in social life in de-occupied towns in Eastern and Southern Ukraine (Lyman, Izium, Kherson), and in displaced people’s investment in their communities of origin damaged by war.
